To mark our Centennial year in 2009, the Centennial Committee decided to instigate the creation of 5 scholarships. They were meant to represent the the 5 sections in the club. These disciplines were Music, Art Literature, Drama and Humanities. Three committee members took it upon themselves to organize events with a view to fundraising. They were Dawn Potts, Barbara Fris and Jennifer Carroll however the whole membership became actively involved.

We held Concerts, Dinners, and evenings of Music and Poetry. We made jams, we canned peaches to sell at events and many members also made individual donations to the fund. The net result was a working amount of over $7,000.00. This princely sum enabled us to award 5 $1.000.00 scholarships to women working in the arts.

We asked each institution to select a women student who they felt was about to achieve great things. The Institutions were not given any other parameter, we just asked that all the recipients should show real promise. We contacted The U of T for our Musician, Annemieka Vandekraay, OCAD for our artist, Kerry Palangio, Humber College for our writer, Deborah Anne Tunney, York University for our dancer, Nancy Cardwell and Ryerson University for our actor, Erica Vella. All 5 recipients were also given a free one year membership to the Heliconian Club as part of their prize.

We presented the awards at a wonderful Gala dinner. It was felt by our members that both the evening and the project were a huge success. We look forward to continuing this project at some future date as it proved to be so rewarding for all involved.
