May 11, 2013: “Inspiring, Interpreting and Preserving Vision” Photography Show

Every May, Toronto hosts the Contact Photography Festival. Over 175 venues have exhibitions during the month. The thematic focus of the 2013 festival is “Field of Vision”.

The Art Section of the Heliconian Club is sponsoring an art show of photography and photography-inspired works in May 2013. Building on the Contact Festival focus, the show is titled “Photography: Inspiring, Interpreting and Preserving Vision”.

The work in this show is by members of various sections of the Heliconian Club. The images displayed are photographs or include a photographic element (for example, in a painting or collage). The show will be hanging from May 10-29, 2013. There will be an opening reception on May 11. All are invited to view and enjoy this exhibition!

March 9, 2013: Sue Ennis “Recent Paintings”

Reverse Painting on Plexiglas, 22″ x 28″

My show “Recent Paintings” features abstract works in different media. Some are reverse paintings on Plexiglas which results in a very smooth but high sheen surface. Others are done with acrylic on board or canvas, or by mixing media. What unites them all is my love of colour, texture, energy and emotion. All of them are driven by colour and by intuition.

I feel that all paintings are a conversation between the viewer and the artist. The conversation can take many turns, and the viewer may or may not see the paintings the same way that I do. That is what makes abstract painting so exciting to me.

Please join me for the opening reception on March 9th from 1:00 pm- 4:00pm. For viewings at other times, please call 416 922 3618 to check availability of space, as gallery hours vary. The show closes on March 28th.

Pre-Order Centennial Portraits before the November Launch

We have been hard at work this summer to design and produce Centennial Portraits, an art book by Mary Perdue, featuring images of Heliconian Club members as the Club celebrated its 100th anniversary. In addition to being a great piece of memorabilia for members, this book also makes an excellent gift item as the book captures the Club’s historical significance for Toronto and Canada. In collaboration with designer Margaret Lam, we are busy working on the book this summer with plans to have a public book launch on November 16th, 2012. A special club night on November 9th is also slated to celebrate the book launch.

We are currently accepting pre-orders for this historic book, as this may be the only time that this book will go into print. Furthermore, your pre-orders will also go a long way in allowing us to increase the quantities in this first run.

You can pre-order your books by sending in a cheque for 50% of the order (each book is $40) by Friday, September 7th, making it payable to “Toronto Heliconian Club” with “Centennial Portraits” in the memo. The balance will be due when you pick up the book at the book launch in November.

For more information, please contact us at info@heliconianclub.org or call 416-922-3618.

“Summer Saturdays”: July 7 – August 25

Art by Kathleen Daly Pepper

Put some colour in your Saturday afternoons this summer! Come and enjoy new and exciting art in our historical Heliconian Hall situated in Yorkville. There will be an art show happening every Saturday from noon to 4pm, between July 7th and August 25th. There are also two special opening receptions on July 7th and August 4th.

Take this opportunity to visit us this summer and get to know the works by our art section members, and experience a piece of Toronto’s history in the heart of the city!

New Directions: May 24

"The Senator" by Peggy Dean, 16" x 20"

"Night Time in the City" by Brenda Bisiker, 13.5" x 17.5"

The exhibit explores two Heliconian artists’ immersion in new medium inspired by their own individual muses. Both have been working towards the show at Hag Atelier in the Distillery District with artist Heather Gentleman.

Brenda Bisiker has been working in oil glazing inspired by her muse, granddaughter Matlida. Her Encaustic work in non-objective abstraction is derivative of the medium’s tactile qualities.

Peggy Dean’s exploration of oil glazing is driven by her muse: her fascination with the North and passion for Polar Bears.

Please join us for the opening reception of an exhibition of paintings on Saturday May 12, 2012, 1-4pm and the closing reception on Thursday May 24, 2012, 5-8pm.

The art remains on display from May 12 until May 30. Gallery hours vary; please call 416-922-3618 to arrange a visit.
