Jana Skarecky was born in Prague and came to Canada with her family in 1968. She studied music composition with Barrie Cabena in Canada and with Peter Sculthorpe in Australia, where she received a MMus degree from the University of Sydney. She also studied piano with Erhard Schlenker. Jana has written music for solo voices, choir, chamber groups and orchestra. Her compositions have been performed on four continents.
Her orchestral work Streams opened Hammerson Hall of the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. She loves writing for the voice and setting poetry to music. Her one-woman opera Emily, the Way You Are, celebrating the life and work of Emily Carr, continues to be enthusiastically received by audiences. Jana is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre and has been Chair of the Association of Canadian Women Composers.
As a visual artist, Jana paints with acrylics and has had exhibitions of her art in Mississauga, Brampton, Stratford, Toronto and in Denmark. She finds working as a composer and an artist a stimulating combination. Many of her paintings were created in parallel with her compositions and concerts of her work have been combined with exhibitions of her paintings.
Jana has two grown-up daughters who are exploring their own creativity. She lives in the country near Binbrook, Ontario with her husband Paul and enjoys being surrounded by nature as she tries to let the invisible and inaudible come alive in her art and music.
