Sheila Hawks

Sheila Hawks was born in Toronto in 1939. She studied English as an adult student in Victoria College at the University of Toronto to further her love of books. She took early retirement from Air Canada to pursue other interests. She worked at Ritchies Auctioneers, at an art gallery, hot-walked horses at Woodbine Race Track, got her real estate license and finally got into the world of publishing. She worked as a publicist for Diane Hargrave Publicity and Cormorant Books.

The late Joanne Bersudsky nominated Sheila for membership in the Heliconian Club in the late 1980s. She has been involved with the Literary Lecture Series since its beginning in 1996. Since 2003, she has led the planning and organization of the series along with Wendy Steepe. She followed the original mandate: to promote Canadian authors in fiction and non-fiction. The series has been a tremendous success with annual subscriptions of over 300 avid readers. Sheila established a rapport with the publicists of all the Canadian publishers to ensure the promotion and excellent consistency of the series. She has also been an enthusiastic volunteer for many other activities at the Club and continues to organize outings to cultural venues.
